ABOUT CRAIG BOEHMAN

American photographer Craig Boehman is based in Mumbai. He began his professional career in photography when one of his street images was selected for the cover of the German edition of Le Monde Diplomatique in 2015. Since then his focus has been on photography in public places, with long-term street and documentary projects in Kolkata and Mumbai.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Craig began to explore fine art composite photography during India’s strict lockdown phase in early 2020. His keen interest in Expressionism lead him to explore street imagery based around candid and posed shots of individuals as subjects. Many of his composites are made up of street shots he’s taken over the years, oftentimes combined with recent portraits and self-portraits.

Craig runs street photography workshops and accepts assignments and commissions. His work has been shown in photography exhibitions around the world and featured in publications like Le Monde Diplomatique, Verve Magazine, and The Hindustan Times.

NEWS:

April 2020 -

I'm collaborating with urban planner Mahak Agrawal on a project featuring sanitary issues in Delhi and Kolkata. Though on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic, you can read the article penned by Agrawal, "Can 'cleanliness' protect India from COVID-19?" to learn more.

May 20, 2020 -

What can I say? We've been in lockdown for more weeks than care to count. But I remain upbeat about learning new things and have been studying compositing in hopes of re-boot for my photography for when I'm cut loose again. Check out my Instagram profile for all the new sketches.

Artist Statement

As a photographer, I juggle two to four genres at any given time, from long-term documentary projects coupled with client work and artistic explorations. At best it’s a balancing act with one foot in the commercial world and one foot planted in my own. Whatever my focus, my methodology is the same.

I work exclusively with a full frame mirrorless camera and an assortment of prime lenses to capture my images. For post-processing I use Photoshop. Time requirements for editing depends on the context. Documentary work summons a light touch, portraits take more time. My fine art composites pieces may take up to five to six hours or more in post, apart from pre-production. Regardless of the genre, I consider the work I perform in the editing process to be equally as important as the photographic elements.

Expressionism has influenced me since the beginning. In particular, I’m drawn to the individual in isolation. This runs contrary to everything around me: Mumbai’s 18+ million residents, the connectivity of much of the world to the Internet. But what I see, when it’s not rejection to the status quo, acceptance of tradition, joy to be alive, or sorrow awaiting death, is absurdity in motion. The great irony is that through my lens, I see nothing but existential conflict. Humankind are but tourists in The Experience. This is what I seek to show you.
